The Jefferson County Food Bank Association is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to recruiting the board members it needs to ensure maximum impact. JFCBA strives to support and promote excellence in board service with cutting-edge thinking and resources related to nonprofit board recruitment and governance. We champion the importance of exceptional board leadership and believe our organization needs a strong and effective board to realize its full potential for good.

Summary Job Description

The Jefferson County Food Bank Association is seeking a new board member to serve a three-year term.

We are looking for mission-aligned individuals with strong collaboration, communication, implementation, and strategic skills, a commitment to DEI, and expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Supply Chain Logistics

  • Jefferson County Local Food Network

  • Experience in Local, State, and/or National Government Service

  • Non-Profit CEO

  • Commercial Real Estate Developer and/or Builder

  • Publisher/Media

The board of the JCFBA organization is a volunteer board. Members are not paid and dedicate their time and expertise to support the JCFBA and its mission and collective purpose. They typically serve an average of five hours per week.

We believe decisions about board roles are a mutual decision between the prospective board member and the JCFBA board. If there’s a mutual interest, prospective candidates may be invited to join a committee or tiger team in order to become more familiar with the organization before a vote by the board.

About the JCFBA

What’s Expected of a JCFBA Board Member?

As the leadership body of the organization, the board is responsible for:

  • Determining and supporting the mission and objectives of the organization

  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management

  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director

  • Strategic and organizational planning

  • Supporting fundraising and resource development

  • Approving and monitoring JCFBA’s programs and services

  • Enhancing JCFBA’s public image

  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of JCFBA

Each individual board member is expected to:

  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in at least 75% of board meetings

  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions

  • Disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of JCFBA

  • Model the organization’s values

  • Commit to human equity and social justice

  • Have a strong passion for food justice and understanding on issues related to poverty and hunger

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization

  • Participate in fundraising events that support JCFBA

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve JCFBA’s mission

  • Make a personally significant gift each year, which may include time, talent, and/or experiences

  • Participate fully in one or more committees and/or contribute expertise and skill in a specific area that supports the JCFBA

In addition, board members:

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs

  • Address all reported concerns or complaints regarding corporate accounting practices, internal controls, or auditing

  • Follow established Standard Operating Procedures for evaluation of the Executive Director, which includes input from stakeholders and the ED.

  • Approve major purchases and financial transactions that are outside of the Association’s business routine.

  • Visit each food bank at least once yearly
